Frequently asked questions
Are there other activities directly related to NASSAM 2020 not shown here? No, during our planning over the course of the years 2018, 2019 and 2020 many suggestions for the organizers to add things have been and will be made. While we sincerely appreciate the ideas, we will at some point, run out of time, money and volunteers. Others will make suggestions that we have and will continue to entertain, and perhaps even add, but most will fall by the wayside due to the need for….well, time, money and volunteers. One of the best suggestions came from a NASSAM planner from previous years for the source of information for the runs, those suggestions were invaluable, so we do listen. Two things, please don’t take anything personally if we don’t incorporate your suggestion, and keep in mind — your suggestion will have a better chance of being added if YOU do the work.
How do I know I’m registered? You will receive an email from the NASSAM 2020 website and you will receive a payment receipt from PayPal. If you happened to lose track of those emails you may always visit the NASSAM 2020 website, click on the line to “Who’s Going?” and look for your name. We will post first name/first letter of last name and the state. You should be able to find yourself. We are also listing the runs you’ve chosen.
What are the costs for things like hotel, registration etc.? Please refer to “The Basics” page for this information.
Are there other hotel options? Yes, there are several hotels within visual distance of the Best Western ranging from Motel 6 to Super 8 to Holiday Inn Express to Hampton Inn plus three or four others. If you choose NOT to stay at the Best Western or our block of rooms fills up we’ll leave it to you to make your own arrangements. If we sell out 100 rooms we will help folks with arrangements. We do have an overflow hotel contract set for an additional 25 rooms as a backup.
Is there an RV Park nearby? There are many, we’ll leave it to RVers to choose, there is a KOA that is close.
Is breakfast included? No, but there are lots of places within a couple of miles where visitor can grab anything from McDonalds to a sit-down breakfast (one place is on site).
How many people do you think would attend? We've asked the hotel to block out 100 rooms which they will hold until 45 days prior to the event. In reality, maybe 75 cars and 135 people.
Will Vendors be attending? Yes, see Supporting Organizations for the list of participants.
Is there a run to Wall Drug? Yes, it is the lunch stop on the Badlands Run.
How long are the runs? They vary in length. We have tried to keep them to actual driving of no more than about 3-4 hours. Badlands and Devils tower are scenic out and I-90 back. Custer State Park is kind of a 3-hour jaunt in the middle of the day without a lunch stop. Spearfish Canyon will have a lunch.
Where are the nearest laundry facilities? There are two guest laundry rooms at the hotel. Detergent and dryer sheets may be purchased at the front desk if you’ve forgotten.
Where is the nearest fuel?
Mobil – Right at the hotel (literally, the parking lots are connected).
Phillips 66 – Across the street from the hotel.
Exxon – 0.2 miles south on Lacrosse just over I-90 on the right.
SPF – 2215 Haines Ave, Rapid City, SD – About 1.5 miles to the west of the hotel just north of I-90.
There are no Shell or Chevron stations nearby.
Where is the nearest car wash?
You may wash your car at the hotel. Just look for the car wash area in the back-parking lot near the vendors. The hotel will provide hoses, spray nozzles and a couple of buckets. One of your supporters from Washington States Griot’s Garage is providing soap and wash sponges that should be okay for use on cars that have been polished and waxed. But if you are particularly sensitive about your paint please bring your own soap, sponge and microfiber towel for washing and drying.
Parkway Car Wash – 206 East Blvd N, Rapid City, SD – Just a couple of miles from the hotel. South on Lacrosse, west on East North Street which bends to the south and it is on your left. Better look at a map before trying to understand those directions.
Is there trailer parking?
Yes, the trailers (large — big enough to carry a car and small-trailers towed by a Kappa) will be parked in the lot near the vendors and cars. Our staff will direct you to locations to unload and park.
Will the silent auction be online?
No, we simply don’t have the resources (read that as volunteers and expertise) to pursue that. Additionally, shipping would be an issue as the organizers don’t live anywhere near Rapid City. Lastly, we don’t wish (this year anyway) to turn our friendly little auction into Ebay.
